How to resize a video to 9:16

  1. Add your video

Use desktop Chrome, Edge or Firefox, open the editor and choose your video in Add media. Editing happens on your device; the footage is not uploaded.

  2. Choose the output shape

In the format menu under the preview, choose 9:16 · Shorts / TikTok. The preview becomes vertical. You can also choose 16:9 landscape, 1:1 square or 4:5 portrait.

  3. Frame each clip

Select a timeline clip and look under Framing. Choose Crop to fill to fill the vertical frame, then drag the picture in the preview to keep the subject visible. Use Show whole video to keep the entire original picture, with a blurred copy of it filling the space around it.

  4. Play it back and export

Check the subject throughout the clip, especially if it moves. Click Export and choose 1080p for a 1080 × 1920 vertical file, or 720p for 720 × 1280. The export is free and has no watermark.

Changing 16:9 to 9:16 with Crop to fill removes the sides of a wide picture.

Crop to fill or show the whole video?

Crop to fill makes the picture cover the output frame. Part of the original image falls outside it. Dragging the preview chooses which part stays visible; it does not stretch the image.

Show whole video preserves the full picture when zoom is at 100%. If the clip and output have different shapes, the space around it shows the project background: a blurred copy of the clip, black, white or a color you pick. This is useful when cutting off the sides would hide something important.

What happens when the subject moves?

Framing is fixed for each clip; Little Cut does not automatically track a face or subject. If the action moves out of the crop, split the clip and adjust the framing of each piece, or show the whole video.

Choose the video shape before positioning captions. Check the words again in the final frame so they stay easy to read.

Keep an editable copy

Use Save project before making another format. The .littlecut file includes your media and edits, so you can reopen the project and export a landscape or square version later.

Resizing changes the frame shape; it does not add detail to low-resolution footage. Export support and speed depend on your browser and device. Mobile editing is not fully supported yet.
